Finishing what was left!

This article (Minor Faction Radar), is part of the Paradox: Revival Project and is an attempt to finish off what was left of the wiki.

One simple factor of modern warfare that many of the major factions of the world take for granted, is the ready availability of radar systems (or their equivalents), to the point where the distant days of World War II where warring parties who wished to have radar coverage at field bases had to build local Radar Domes are long past, nowadays most major factions have their MCVs come with radar systems standard - though there are notable exceptions. So where does that leave those minor powers of the world? Radar coverage of some capacity is simply too valuable not to have, yet they don't exactly have the resources of the major powers to allow for inbuilt radar coverage from their main command structures. The solution as is often the case, is a purpose built vehicle or structure festooned with the responsibilities of radar support. Though with many vehicles given the role, they are often left dug in at location in a secure position or out of the way of prying eyes, leaving little chance of them being safely moved during an active battle though some factions have found it more beneficial to have their source of radar to be mobile.

Tactical Analysis[]

  • Old, but working : While undeniably dated by '69, this relic still works just as well back in WW2 as it does now for the ARVN military in providing radar and communications.
  • PING : Several new additions to the MK2 in comparison to the MK1 allow for Radar Pings on the map, decloaking any stealthed unit within its radius and showing the area for a temporary time
  • beep beEP BEEP : The Radar Truck has no way to defend itself in a scuffle and is very weakly armored. Don't expect miracles when its under fire.

Background[]

As the war in Vietnam continued with no end in sight, it became obvious to the ARVN it would vital to have some way to detect and track the Vietcong. Reaching out to the Allies, they requested a cheap means to provide radar detection for their forces. The Allies response was to sell them dozens of old radar trucks for a pittance of their original price. Of course, even for their low cost, some complained they were being ripped off. Most of the trucks were worth little more than scrap and their radar sets barely functional and severely out of date. Nevertheless, they made do, and after a lot of work and elbow grease they managed to get the trucks back into semi working order. They even managed to improve on the radar itself, giving it the ability to release occasional pings to reveal otherwise hidden enemies. Sadly, the truck must devote all available power to power their radar, leaving them little more than stationary objects.

Radar Signal Bunker[]

Tactical Analysis[]

  • Toughest of the tough: The Radar Signal Bunker is one of the most well-protected faction radars ever. Even the dreaded Armageddon Cannon will need more than one shot to destroy this structure.
  • When the going gets tough: If things look dire, the Signal Bunker can call an artillery strike on its own position. While this may damage the bunker, it is usually sufficient to dissuade any attackers.
  • Not tough enough: Ultimately, the Signal Bunker is still a stationary target, and even the mightiest fortress can not stand undefended.

Before the Bombs[]

The Signal Bunker is the result of years of constant warfare. As the Nationalists shifted to defense, they needed a way to keep an eye on the enemy and be able to counter their attack. Radar installations were built, but the PRA knew how essential they were a would constantly attack them. In reaction, the radar sets were mounted in bunkers, gradually as the war went on these bunkers were continually reinforced to the point they could take a direct hit from an Armageddon Cannon and still be standing. To protect against infiltrators, the people were locked away inside, food and supplies were delivered via small hatches, most soldiers never spied a glimpse of the occupants. The technicians who manned the bunkers took their isolation in stride, so utterly devoted to their duties that they saw nothing wrong with their imprisonment. If the ever felt their safehold was in danger of being penetrated, the fanatic Nationalists would call on nearby artillery to fire on their base, assured that they would survive the bombardment, later in the war this duty would be handled by devoted mortar crews made of up reanimated soldiers.

After the Bombs[]

Though it has months, maybe years, since their last resupply, Signal Bunkers remain active. How they remain in action is unknown. All attempts to gain entry have failed as every possible entryway has been found block, sealed, or barricaded from the inside. Only the most powerful weapons are capable of breaching these fortresses, and such firepower is usually sufficient to reduce the building and its contents to unrecognizable rubble. Yet the bunkers still continue to send information to nearby Command Bunkers. Who, or what, is operating these installations is of much debate in the wasteland. Some believe they are loyal soldiers, uttering devoted to their duties. Other believe the operators are now, if they weren’t before the bombs, undead abominations created by Blue Chinese’s twisted science. Others whisper it is restless souls of the former occupants, unable to rest as long as a single Chinese communist still lives. The truth is likely to remain a mystery.

Tactical Analysis[]

  • Bamboo Technology: Using the remains of a wrecked Sputnik, the Vietcong have managed to create their own radar outpost
  • Spy in the grass: Thanks to use of local materials, the Sputnik is perfectly concealed, freeing the Vietcong from needing to guard it.
  • Scrapped Again: If it is found, then the Sputnik is in big trouble, as it is unable to move and its makeshift repairs won’t hold up to enemy fire for long.

Background[]

I believe we’ve discovered how the Vietcong have been always one step ahead of us. One of our patrols stumbled upon, quite literally, an old Sputnik. While that may not seem surprising given the number that have used, and destroyed, this one despite its state of repair was still running. Apparently the congs had managed rig it up into a radar post, and if there is one of these thing there is certain to be more. This is a big problem, given the sheer number of wrecks out there finding these things is like a needle in haystack, especially as congs have likely gone hidden them under camouflage. We wouldn’t have even known it was there if it weren’t for the Beagle’s scanners. The ARVN is suggesting we just napalm the whole area, I’ve told them I would take that under advisement.

Radar Crawler[]

Before the Bombs[]

During the beginning of the Chinese Civil War, the People’s Liberation Army excelled at penetrating enemy lines. Forces would often range miles into enemy territory, only being forced to turn back at great cost and lack of supplies. However, the Blue Chinese learned from these early raids, and proceeded to take the term ‘defense in debt’ to its maximum potential. Acres of trenches, bunkers, and strongpoints were constructed, various mines and traps were seeded though their territory.

At first the PLA’s leadership ignored this new challenge, preferring to use their tried and true strategy of throwing wave after wave of soldiers, but after a successful trap managed to destroy over a hundred tanks including one of their prized Overlords they demanded something to be done. Leang was the one who came up with a solution, a mobilized radar. While the PLA had radar installations, these were primitive and lacked to range to watch over great distances, and with the army constantly on the move there was no time to stop and build new ones, especially in enemy territory. Therefore, the radar needed to be made mobile so as to keep up with their forces.

To start with, Leang took her recently developed Gatling Crawler. Next she ripped off its namesake weapon along with its large stores of ammunition. Now, with plenty of unused space, she had it filled with as much equipment as it could be possibly hold without affecting its performance and mounted a several radar dishes atop the now empty gatling mount. The resulting vehicles, named the Radar Crawler, could keep up with the military’s forces and was protected enough to withstand most non-antitank ordnance. It could also overcharge the radar in one direction to give it greater range and reveal any concealed surprises.

Needless to say, once the Blue Chinese forces caught on to their function Radar Crawlers became priority targets. Due to both their expense and importance, Radar Truck were one the few units the PLA could not be used wastefully. Crews of such were ordered to avoid damaging their vehicles and, unpalatable as it was to the generals, retreat if threatened. This did not make them popular with the rest of the troops who considered them cowards. Hypocritically, being assigned to one was a much sought after duty, and fights to be chosen to drive a new Crawler were quite common

After the bombs[]

Radar Crawlers are rarely seen the in wasteland, many believe that they were all destroyed in the nuclear holocaust.

That’s just what their operators want them to believe.

in truth, while many were destroyed by the bombs, there remain numerous crawlers in China. When the final battle began, their drivers followed their primary directive and fled the battlefield. While not all succeeded and many more were killed in the devastation that followed, some managed to survive and continue travel the now scarred lands.

You will rarely actually see them however. Having witnessed the devastation man brought upon the earth, they do their best to avoid all contact with others, a task made easier thanks to their jury rigged, barely functional radar equipment. Even loners still need supplies however, and lacking either armament or significant armour they can’t simply barge in and take what they want like bandits. Instead, they stakeout isolated villages, observe any defenses and weaknesses, and then sneak in at the dead of night and quietly steal as much as they can carry. Often their victims don’t know they’ve been robbed, at least not until they take inventory. While this seems kinder then the methods of their fellows, in the wasteland where every scrap food and resources is precious, their actions are just as cruel and deadly as the rest.

Not all such raids are successful, some do get caught or have their method of transport cornered. What happens to them depends on who is the capturer. Forces of the Atomic Kingdom simply execute them, as do those of Blue China (although personnel from the Allied Nations prefer to take them back to base for interrogation, something many Crawler crews happily go along with).

Those captured by claimants of their former nation have a different fate. After being beaten for their cowardice and treachery, they are assigned guards and incorporated in their forces, occasionally sent out in raids much as they did before. They rarely stay long however, eventually to managing to lose (or remove) their wardens and slip away into the wasteland, usually right when things starting taking a turn for the worst.

Tactical Analysis[]

  • Weather at 11: At its most basic, the Starstorm is a heavy tank with a massive radar dish along with a radar extender. It is able to provide map information while on the move.
  • Clear skies at noon: The secondary ability of the starstorm is to divert most of its generator power to its radar systems. Allowing it to ambiently detect stealthed units in a decent radius around itself.
  • Storms at 3: While well armored, it is still an entirely unarmed vehicle. When its secondary ability is used it reduces its speed considerably rendering it a very vulnerable target.

Background[]

Radar, an essential tool of warfare. It tells you where you are, where your forces are and where the enemy is not. But not everyone has access to it, and those that do can find themselves suddenly cut off. Be it power issues, sabotage, artillery, or someone leaning on the wrong switch a commander may find his view of the battlefield suddenly reduced to only as far as he can see. Unless, that is, if he didn’t have a backup.

Introducing the Starstorm Mobile Radar. Mounted on an all terrain armoured tank chassis this tank assures that you’ll never be left blinded. Its 3 inch thick protection prevents anything harming either its delicate equipment or crew and a top speed of 25 miles means it can get out of danger quickly. And if the enemy tries to be sneaky, the Starstorm can increase the power to its dish to flush out any hidden foe.

So don’t be left in the dark, buy yourself a Starstorm for your forces today.

Tactical Analysis[]

  • One vision: The Cult’s provider of radar, the Radio Station scans the surrounding area and conveys the information to its fellow cultists via code.
  • One Purpose: The station is also responsible for commanding undercover cultists to preform special missions or duties, aka protocols.
  • The technology of peace: Like other radar stations the Radio Station is defenseless if attacked.

Background[]

Secret societies have always had hidden and coded ways to communicate to one another through handshakes, unique languages, written code. The Black Hand are no different in this manner. For millennia, or so one or two of them have claimed, agents of the cult have relayed important information through secret codexes different from any known language. Through this they have managed to keep their enemies from entirely breaking their information network but it was slow to decipher and went only as fast as a carrier pigeon or feet could relay it. This was merely the way things worked in those times. Operations between cells might take a decade or two to fully coordinate and organize and thats only when the messengers werent intercepted.

By the 1800s, advancements in technology allowed the cult to develop new and almost exotic ways to relay info. One of the more commonplace ways was through "Rail Running". Using electric signals sent through the train rail lines they could send coded messages to their distant comrades without suspicion or using capturable messengers. However once it was discovered that the cult was using the rails for distant communication such methods became quickly obsolete. Anyone who had the right equipment could listen in as well, though they may not understand what the detected sounds are.

With the invention of wireless telegraphs in the late 1890s the Cult quickly seized the chance to finally have a communication system that would prove perfect for their cause. Over time it went from dedicated wireless spark gap generators to compromised civilian radio stations. Further developing their codes and languge the Cult is able to subtly hide messages within a radio host's programs, music and even on specific bands coming from the transmitters. Supposedly there are thousands of these Cult operated radio stations all over the world. Used as a silent way to distribute orders, send reports and spread the word of the prophet to their educated listeners.
