Tactical AnalysisEdit

  • Heatseeker: The SAM Site provides an effective all purpose anti-aircraft system. Its heat seeking missiles destroy any aircraft that come close. With its own independent power source, it is not reliant on being provided power by its owner.
  • It's Too Hot!: Unfortunately, missiles are useless for destroying surface targets. To top it off, toughened concrete can be cracked by powerful explosives, making the SAM site vulnerable to surface attacks.

Operational HistoryEdit

Anti-aircraft missiles are staple of any armed force fighting anything that flies. With the introduction of the Hawker Jumpjet by the Allies in the Second World War, missile tracking improved massively. A new heat seeking system offered far better performance than the dumb-fire rockets of other systems at the time, such as the MiG Nine. Coupled with the Hawker's other unique features, it offered the Allies a aerial edge over the Soviets at the time.

In the years that followed, most systems adopted the heat seeking missiles to good effect. One of such is International Inc.'s own "Patriot Missile". The basic structure from the original "Rattler" missiles is retained, with an infrared sensor providing a location of the hottest object nearby (usually a hot plume of aircraft exhaust), and an electrical circuit moving the fins at the back of the missile to change its course towards the heat.

The "Patriot" takes this heat seeking capability to a new level of ubiquity. Originally offered as a competitor to the Red-Eye anti-air missile, it was designed with handheld missile tubes in mind. Despite the failed bid to the Allies, the handheld Patriot still went into production and can be found in the hands of mercenaries and armed forces globally, and occasionally in the hands of terrorist organisations).

Encouraged by good sales, II proceeded to design and sell an upscaled version of the Patriot to be fired from a stable platform (such as a warship or bunker). This forms the basis of the SAM Site, which is completed by the addition of surrounding concrete fortifications and a toughened steel "lid" to prevent counter attacks from ground attack planes when not firing.

Most Dozers are equipped with the requirements to quickly assemble a SAM Site on the field on receiving an order to do so (consisting of little more than steel tubes and concrete), so any commander who finds an II Dozer is able to set one up in short order.
